Club Policies

The Bathurst Pickleball Club is committed to providing a recreational sports environment where everyone is treated fairly and with respect.

Bathurst Pickleball Club Code of Conduct

The Bathurst Pickleball Club (BPC) is a volunteer-run club where members pitch in (contribute to) and share in the responsibilities and tasks that are essential to run the club (for example setting up for play, cleaning up and storing equipment after play). The BPC is committed to providing a recreational sports environment where everyone is treated fairly and with respect. Members, including volunteers, are expected to conduct themselves at all times in a manner consistent with the values of the BPC: respect, fairness, integrity, honesty, transparency and safety. The BPC Board of Directors (BoD) has established this Code of Conduct to which all volunteers, members, their guests and visitors of the club must adhere.

Purpose:

To create a positive atmosphere for the BPC, the Code of Conduct will allow members, their guests and club visitors to fully enjoy the benefits of BPC events, services and facilities.

Code of Conduct:

  1. Members are expected to conduct themselves in a friendly and courteous manner at all times, on the courts, as spectators, or while participating in any BPC event. Foul language, arguments over points or scores, or any other disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated.    Members are expected to create an environment that supports the dignity of, and equity for, all members and is free of discrimination and harassment.   Impairment due to alcohol or other substances will not be tolerated.
  2. Members will treat all BPC volunteers with courtesy and respect and will respect the authority and decision-making decisions conferred on members of management. Differences of opinion related to safety should be voiced immediately; other concerns or suggestions should be shared respectfully with those in the leadership role at an appropriate time. Members are encouraged to bring forward to their group leaders any unresolved policy breaches and other issues that have a detrimental effect on their or other members’ enjoyment of the sport.
  3. Members will not abuse or purposely mishandle any equipment or property including their own paddle. They will not act or play in a manner that threatens their safety or the safety of others.
  4. Members will respect the rules of the venue or public facilities being used, and will not complain, or give direction to venue staff, change set-ups, adjust thermostats, etc.   Issues pertaining to venues are to be communicated to respective Group leaders for gym or any member of the Board of Directors for Outdoor courts.
  5. Members will make themselves familiar with and abide by the policies of the BPC (Code of Conduct, Safety, Etiquette, etc.). They will also ensure that their guests and newcomers are well informed of the BPC rules of play, Code of Conduct and basic safety and etiquette policies.
  6. Members will not damage the BPC’s reputation by words, actions or written communications.
  7. Members will not speak, communicate or infer to speak on behalf of the BPC, unless specifically authorized by the BoD.
  8. Members will use safe and proper attire and personal equipment at all times. This includes non-offensive logos, designs and phrases on attire.

Failure to abide by this Code may result in disciplinary action by the BoD or by group leaders. This may range from a simple discussion of the matter at hand, to a warning, to suspension, to revocation of membership.

Safety and Etiquette

Let’s be safe on the court!

Nobody wants to be injured while having fun so let’s put a few things into practice to create a safe environment while we play pickleball.

  • Proper foot wear makes all the difference! Court shoes are designed for any sport that’s played on a court where you’re moving in many different directions.   Check out this link for a full explanation: https://pickleballcentral.com/blog/running-shoes-vs-court-shoes-whats-the-difference#SnippetTab
  • Protective eyewear, remember the saying, “its only fun until somebody loses an eye!”   Well it’s true and there’s an easy and inexpensive solution that reduces the risk!   Why take the chance?
  • Be aware of your surroundings!  Check out the court before you play and remove any debris or liquid that might’ve been left behind by the previous users.  We share our facility with others.  We need to take a proactive approach to making sure that the court we’re playing on is safe to do so.  Don’t make it someone else’s responsibility.  It’s your safety that’s at risk!

Court Safety

  • Please avoid running backwards on the court to return a lob.  Turn and run forward or let it go!
  • When your ball strays onto another court call out “BALL” loudly & only once, it is distracting to those not affected if you keep repeating it!  Wait for the ball to be returned.  Do not enter another court while the game is in play.
  • If you hear “BALL” stop your game if the callout comes from the court next to you and wait until it is safe to resume play.
  • Never cross behind a court in play!  If the players are not aware that you are there it could result in injury for one or both of you.  Always wait to cross through the court near the net when play has been stopped.

Court Etiquette

  • Treat all members/guests with courtesy and respect.
  • Introduce yourself to any player you do not know.
  • Players are responsible for line calls.  If the receiving team is unsure the ball is “IN.”
  • When making line calls respect your opponent’s right to make all calls on their end of the court.
  • Call your own shot “OUT” if you see it.
  • Do not call a ball “OUT” if there’s any doubt.
  • Resolve any uncertainty in favour of your opponents.
  • Call a fault on yourself or your partner if you’re aware of it, regardless of whether your opponents are.
  • Claim a replay only if something has hindered your ability to play the ball.  If “BALL” is called after you hit the ball to return it that is not grounds for a replay.

When Players Are Waiting/Courts Are Full (Outdoor)

Principles:

  • Roughly the same playing time for everyone.
  • Nobody is forced to play with anyone else.
  • Be kind to one another and welcome new players and out-of-towners.

How it works:

If courts are not full, players may organize any way they wish.

If courts are full and players are waiting…

If it is a mixture of groups and individuals: “First off, first on paddle stacking”

  1. Games with regular scoring are to 9, win by 1; rally point scoring to 15 win by 1; drilling (4 people only) or non-scoring games 10 minutes.
  2. Stack your paddles in groups of four along the fence. Each set of three courts will have its own stacking.
  3. When your foursome finishes, it exits the court through the middle when waved through. Other foursomes shift to the next court away from the waiting area, freeing up the closest court.
  4. The next complete foursome takes the court, and other groups of paddles are moved up. Be ready to play when your turn is next!
  5. The foursome coming off place their paddles in the next four available spots unless they wish to create a different foursome (example: two couples want to play each other).
  6. To create your own foursome, you must wait until all four players are no longer playing before stacking any of the four paddles.
  7. If space is available in front of the created foursome, players who want to join this incomplete group may skip over the created foursome. This means that if you want to create your own foursome, you may have to wait a little longer than if you had joined an incomplete group.
